A New Logo
I made a logo for Art of a Pilgrim
This design turned out to be quite unexpected. My original idea for how the logo would look like was inspired by the Johnnie Walker logo. I would have a pilgrim carrying a pencil or something like that. Definitely grateful that it did not end up looking like that. Although, I still think that would look pretty cool.
In the process, I remembered the logo of Naoki Urasawa’s show, Manben. This is the second time I am mentioning Urasawa as an inspiration in this newsletter. Maybe I should dedicate a whole post about him…
ANYWAY, I actually already made a logo inspired by Manben back in 2020. It was for an art group I created with some friends. It was called “You’ll Never Draw Alone”. Yes, it was inspired by the song You’ll Never Walk Alone. Yes, I am a Liverpool Football Club fan. Shout out to my YNDA brothers and sisters! (If you are following this newsletter)
For Art of a Pilgrim, I definitely did not want to think too much about the design. I just wanted it to show what this newsletter is all about. I love how the cross and the nib somewhat combine to look like a church spire. As for the typography, it seems very imperfect to me. I kept redoing it. My wife eventually told me it looks great the way it is. Then I realized, I am imperfect. I often lose my way in my journey. That’s why the cross is there; to remind me that Christ will lead me back to His way. But I also just really listen to my wife…LOL
My friend asked if I wanted to be more “Ninja” Christian and remove the cross. It seemed like a great idea too but then I remembered all the other Christians in the world living in areas where being a Christian could cost them their life. I live in the Philippines, where I can freely speak about my faith. Don’t get me wrong, I create art for people who come from all walks of life. However, I will not hide the truth of who and whose I am just so more people would be interested in my art.
In the end, I really am grateful for how the logo turned out to look.
For those interested in more updates with my upcoming children’s book, Light Always Shines, I will share some work in progress photos soon. For now, I have changed the title from “Light Always Shines” to “Where is the Light?”
I think the title change would somehow open up more curiosity to what the book is about.
That’s it for now.
Peace!
